Women's Health

Discover a Personalized Approach to Women’s Health with NOR CAL Natural Medicine

Conventional medicine tends to treat men’s and women’s health the same. In fact, health and wellness guidelines have traditionally been developed with men’s anatomy as a baseline. However, women have unique health needs throughout every phase of life. Here at NOR CAL Natural Medicine, we cater to women’s unique needs with a personalized approach aimed at bringing the body back into balance.

Consider a Women's Health Evaluation...

We can help you address common obstacles to health, such as hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, weight gain, cardiovascular challenges, genetic predispositions, mental illnesses and mood disorders, and chronic stress. Our approach to care begins with a 1.5 hour consultation with Dr. Stevens to assess your health, lifestyle, relationships, family history, and medications and/or supplements. Using this information along with specialized functional testing, we can create a treatment plan that addresses the factors underlying your overall health and wellness, so you can improve and prolong your life.

Consider a Women’s Health evaluation for:

Hormone Replacement

Hormonal imbalances contribute to symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), perimenopause, and menopause. Hormone imbalances may also be behind issues such as fatigue, weight gain, sleep disturbances, thyroid conditions, migraine headaches, mood disturbances, cognitive challenges, infertility, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). We’ll create a unique plan for you to optimize your nutrition, exercise, lifestyle changes, and supplementation. In addition, Dr. Stevens may prescribe personalized dosages of Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, which can substantially improve quality of life.

Thyroid Function

Symptoms of a sluggish thyroid often manifest slowly and may include fatigue, changes in weight, depressed mood, muscle and joint aches, constipation, intolerance to cold, and changes in hair, skin, and nail health. A routine screening lab test, Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), does not show the entire picture of your thyroid health. A comprehensive thyroid panel—THS, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3 and a thyroid antibody panel—along with your clinical presentation are most important to make an accurate diagnosis.

Heart Disease/Stroke

Cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death of women (men too) in the U.S. Managing cholesterol and blood pressure are simply not enough. Our blood vessel health (endothelial function), inflammation levels, digestive health, hormone balance, weight, and mental/emotional health all contribute to heart health. Evaluating for and addressing the underlying triggers of inflammation, stress, and infection in your body is key. Treating the whole person is the only way to prevent, treat, and reverse cardiovascular disease.

Digestive Health

The foundation for health is digestive function. Symptoms of frequent indigestion, abdominal discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, reflux, belching, fatigue and weight gain are all indications of inadequate digestive health. Often, these issues are due to food sensitivities and imbalanced intestinal flora. Untreated, these symptoms result in nutrient deficiencies, bowel toxicities, systemic inflammation, and immune dysfunction, which ultimately contribute to the onset of many chronic diseases.

Fatigue (Adrenal Imbalance)

Fatigue caused by anemias, thyroid disorders, infections, and side effects of medication are well known. However, adrenal insufficiency is less commonly diagnosed. Adrenal insufficiency is most often caused by the effects of long-term chronic stress. Chronic stress weakens adrenal gland function over time, resulting in impaired cortisol and DHEA production. Symptoms often include fatigue that is worst in the morning, insomnia, irritability, weight gain, and inability to handle day to day stress. Testing for adrenal function is available, and effective treatments can restore your energy and enhance your quality of life.

Weight Management

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic with many contributing factors. Weight gain may be linked to hormonal imbalances, digestive impairment, dietary choices, nutritional deficiencies, medications, environmental toxicity, and other factors. Identifying the underlying causes for your weight gain is essential for lasting, healthy weight loss. Dr. Stevens will help you get to the root cause of weight gain to personalize a program that’s right for you.

Blood Sugar

Due to the prevalence of obesity, diabetes is an increasingly common health concern in the United States. There is also an accelerating rate of insulin resistance, or prediabetes, yet these issues are preventable and reversible. Blood sugar levels alone do not provide adequate information about how the body is utilizing insulin and processing sugar. Evaluation of insulin levels along with blood sugar levels provides a more complete picture. With this information, we develop personalized treatment plans and help to prevent the onset of diabetes.

Anxiety/Depression

Our mental and emotional wellbeing is an integral component to overall health. Anxiety or depression can significantly interfere with our quality of life. Causes may be diverse and varied, so we seek to find the cause and use alternative therapies to bring the nervous system back into balance. We strive to assist you in living your life to its fullest.

Sleep Health

Sleep is essential for the body to repair and regenerate itself. It is also a key for healthy aging. Keep in mind sleep quality is more important than sleep quantity. We seek to find the underlying cause of your sleep challenges and work with you to correct imbalances, replace nutrients, eliminate toxins, balance hormones, and help you restore natural sleep patterns to maximize your health.

Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis, Scleroderma, Lupus, or Crohn’s disease result from an imbalance in the immune system. It is still not well understood why the immune system may attack the body’s own healthy tissues. However, there is a high suspicion that environmental toxins, chronic infections and impaired digestive function may all be potential triggers. Conventional medical therapies suppress the symptoms. We go further to identify and treat the underlying cause to re-establish a balance in the overactive immune system.

Joint Health/Arthritis

Joint mobility is essential for maintaining an active and productive lifestyle. Suppression of symptoms of joint pain with medication may not be the best treatment approach, as deterioration of the tissue may continue even though pain is diminished. We seek to eliminate the underlying causes of inflammation and restore joint tissue with nutritional supplementation and lifestyle modifications.

Allergies

Due to overexposure of environmental toxins, our immune systems are often challenged beyond their limits, resulting in the development of sensitivities and allergies that include adult-onset asthma, skin rashes, and eczema. Steroid inhalers and creams are not the best long-term treatment approach. Detoxification of the body is the best approach for long-term health.

Chronic Stress

Chronic stress sets a cascade of events in motion directly damaging the cardiovascular system, weakening the immune system, dysregulating the nervous system, and depleting the endocrine systems. Chronic stress is a silent killer. No medication, supplement, or diet can prevent it. Identifying and managing stress is the key. Exercise, visualization, deep breathing, meditation, and yoga have all shown to aid in stress management.

Memory & Brain Health

The aging process brings concerns of declining memory and brain function. However, these are not normal signs of aging. Factors like chronic stress, hormone imbalances, elevated blood sugar, environmental toxicity, nutritional deficiencies, and oxidative stress all play a role in brain health. Through our functional testing and personalized care approach, we can identify the risk factors for your memory and brain health for increased longevity and quality of life.
